You may wonder about the title of this blog..Iyer Iyengar Kitchen...I am a Tanjore Iyer married to an Iyengar and picked up cooking by learning the delicacies of both the customs....and that is what I am sharing here... Recipes popular among the Tamil Iyer & Iyengar communities..

Keerai Masiyal

Popularity: Keerai Masiyal is a very healthy form of Kootu since it contains less spices and vegetable alone.
Ingredients:
1.       Keerai / Greens: 750 gms (finely chopped)
2.       Moong dal: 3 tsps
3.       Salt
4.       Red Chillies: 5 or 6
5.       Mustard: 1 tsp
6.       Orid dal: 1 tsp
7.       Asafoedita: a Pinch
8.       Turmeric Powder: a Pinch
9.       Oil: 2 tsps
10.   Water
Preparation Procedure:
  1. Boil the moong dal with 200 ml water in a kadai and once the moong dal is 3/4th cooked, add the greens with little more water Add salt and turmeric powder.
  2. With a ladle or Thayir Mathu or Masher, mash the Greens and mix them well now and then so that they come very smooth
  3. When the Greens are cooked and water left is very little, season the mustard, asafoedita, orid dal and red chillies to the kadai.
  4. With a ladle or Thayir Mathu, mash the Greens and mix them well. Allow on stove for few mins and switch off.
Easy to make masiyal ready J

One another method of doing this is as below:

Grind 1 tsp of jeera, 4 medium sized red chillies and 2 tsps of grated coconut and make it as a paste finely.

Add this paste to the boiled greens after step 2 once the greens are 3/4th cooked. Just season with mustard and asafoedita and do not add red chillies since we have grinded them in the form of a paste.
